Kaleidoscope initially started as a traveling exhibit in 1969, before settling into the current location at Hallmark’s Crown Center in 1975. His vision was to offer a place where children and families of Kansas City could explore and create. In the 1960s, Don saw the joy his own children had when making art with leftover materials from Hallmark’s manufacturing processes and wanted to share that joy with others. Take your time to explore our whimsical space, make and create, then take home all your goodies to display your greatness!Ī little history: Kaleidoscope was inspired by Don Hall, son of Hallmark’s founder J.C. Once you come out of the bathroom, there is a fountain that you press with your feet and the water comes out.Provided as a gift to the children and families of Kansas City by Hallmark, Kaleidoscope is a FREE! center for artistic exploration and creativity for children of all ages to nourish their artistic spirit! It’s a vivid, imaginative workshop where young artists use their imaginations to paint, discover, have fun, and feel good about their own special ideas! Guests use materials from Hallmark’s manufacturing processes to dream up all kinds of colorful creations–some are cut into shapes, while others are left just as Hallmark sends them. I had to take a picture of this.the bathrooms themselves do not have a sink. You can also make puzzles!! You draw on a square cardboard, and they have a cutting machine that will cut out the puzzle for you! It takes a while, so you might as well create another piece of art while you are waiting. Once your artist is finished, they can place it in this machine and wait for it like you see Aubrey doing. Basically, there's a room for water color. There are chairs big enough for adults and kids alike.īelow is the image of the heat lamp machine thingy. The room is filled with amazing, colorful murals and art. There is one table that ALWAYS has tons of stickers. Here is a shot of what some of the art tables look like. One of the first areas we always go to is the dark room. There is melted crayon and a bunch of wall games with I think lasers. If you have multiple kids, write their names on it - or else I will warn you that there will be a fight when you get home for the art goodies! You might miss the bags that are right in front of you because you may be too excited to get started. They couldn't even sit still for a photo because they were so excited.Īfter grabbing our tickets and waiting in line, the first thing you'll want to do is grab a bag to hold all the art. We visited in March, and my girls remembered going the previous year. Here's what it looks like from the outside. Click here for deets on times and schedules for visitor information. So here it is with words and images!įirst off, did I mention it is free? The amazing folks at Hallmark allows families 40 minute sessions to have fun creating with basically awesome scraps from their card making manufacturing. One of the places I mentioned on the list was Hallmark's Kaleidoscope - but a few short sentences on the place doesn't do it justice. Last year, I created a Top 10 Cheap Thrills in Kansas City for Toddlers.
